The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett
I have a feeling everyone else in the world has read this, so I'll limit my comments to asserting that this is a clever and funny little fable about the redemptive power of reading, and to wondering why Alan Bennett writes so much about the Queen.

But what do you think about the ending?
I'm generally in favour of abolishing the monarchy, and I'd love to give up my job in order to read books and write in notebooks, so the ending was a double helping of wish-fulfilment for me.
